Ride the electron

Derek Virta, once of Dreamend, has descended into an electronic dream. Well, mostly electronic. I can hear some guitar and possibly other analog inputs. The key word above is "dream."

These are pop songs of a sort, though decidedly on the experimental side. They're certainly got an edge. But in any case, they're not free-form ambient excursions. As more than one reviewer has noted, Air is a definite reference point.

But Virta's dreams aren't so pillowy. Yes, he creates a lush atmosphere. But there are moments of rending and dissonance. Not nightmarish by any stretch, but there's a lot more here than gauze.

I don't know why I'm struggling for words with this one. Virta has created some of the most intriguing and engaging electronic pop songs I've heard in quite some time. Enter with no expectations, and leave with your mind expanded. —Jon Worley
